૨૪મી ફેબ્રુઆરીએ હોલિવૂડના ડોલ્બી થિયેટર પરથી ૮૫મા ઓસ્કાર એવોર્ડનું જીવંત પ્રસારણ   
૮૫મા ઓસ્કાર એવોર્ડ માટે જુદી જુદી શ્રેણીનાં નામાંકનોની ગુરુવારે જાહેરાત કરાઈ હતી. સિવિલ વોર પર બનાવાયેલી ફિલ્મ લિન્કને બેસ્ટ પિક્ચર, ડિરેક્ટર અને એક્ટર સહિત ૧૨ જેટલી જુદી જુદી શ્રેણીમાં નોમિનેશન પ્રાપ્ત કરીને ટોચનું સ્થાન પ્રાપ્ત કર્યુ હતું. બેસ્ટ પિક્ચર માટે નોમિનેટ કરાયેલી ફિલ્મોમાં મોટી ઉંમરનાં લોકોના પ્રેમસંબંધ પર આધારિત ફિલ્મ એમર, ઇરાન પર આધારિત ફિલ્મ આર્ગો, બીસ્ટ ઓફ સાઉધર્ન વાઇલ્ડ, ડેન્ગો અનચેઇન્ડ, લેસ મિઝરેબલ્સ, લાઇફ ઓફ પાઇ, સિલ્વર લાઇનિંગ્સ પ્લેબુક અને ઓસામાબ બિન લાદેનને ઠાર મારવા હાથ ધરાયેલાં ઓપરેશન આધારિત ફિલ્મ ઝીરો ડાર્ક થર્ટીનો સમાવેશ થાય છે.
લિંકન ફિલ્મમાં ગુલામીપ્રથા નાબૂદ કરવા માટે અબ્રાહમ લિંકને કરેલા ૧૩મા સુધારાને પસાર કરવાની વાત વણી લેવાઈ છે. ઓસ્કારમાં બેસ્ટ એક્ટર માટે નોમિનેશન મેળવનાર લિંકન ફિલ્મના હીરો ડે લેવિસે અદ્ભુત અભિનય આપ્યો હતો. ડે લેવિસની સાથે બેસ્ટ એક્ટર માટે નોમિનેશન પ્રાપ્ત કરનારા બ્રૂડલી કૂપરે ફિલ્મ સિલ્વર લાઇનિંગ પ્લેબુકમાં માનસિક રોગીની ભૂમિકા ભજવી છે, જે તેનું જીવન પાછું મેળવવા ખૂબ જ સંઘર્ષ કરે છે.
બિન લાદેન પર આધારિત ફિલ્મ ઝીરો ડાર્ક થર્ટી માટે અભિનેત્રી જેસિકા કાસ્ટેને બેસ્ટ એક્ટ્રેસ માટે નોમિનેશન પ્રાપ્ત કર્યું હતું જ્યારે સિલ્વર લાઇનિંગ પ્લેબુકમાં જેનિફર લોવરન્સે મુશ્કેલીમાં ફસાયેલી વિધવા મહિલાની ભૂમિકા ભજવી હતી. બીજી બાજુ બેસ્ટ સર્પોટગ એક્ટ્રેસ માટે ધ માસ્ટરમાં અભિનય બદલ એમી એડમ્સનું નોમિનશન કરાયું હતું. ૨૪મી ફેબ્રુઆરીએ હોલિવૂડના ડોલ્બી થિયેટર પરથી ઓસ્કાર એવોર્ડ સમારંભનું એબીસી ચેનલ જીવંત પ્રસારણ કરશે.

ધોનીને વર્ષના શ્રેષ્ઠ ક્રિકેટરનો એવોર્ડ

વર્ષ ૨૦૧૧-૧૨ના પ્રદર્શનને આધારે બીસીસીઆઇ દ્વારા વાર્ષિક એવોર્ડ્સ એનાયત કરાયા હતા. બુધવારે રાત્રે યોજાયેલા આ એવોર્ડ સમારંભમાં મહેન્દ્રસિંહ ધોનીને બીસીસીઆઈ દ્વારા કેસ્ટ્રોલ ક્રિકેટર ઓફ ધ યર એવોર્ડ એનાયત કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો. ભારતને વન-ડેમાં વર્લ્ડ ચેમ્પિયન બનાવવા બદલ ધોનીની આ એવોર્ડ માટે પસંદગી કરવામાં આવી છે. અંડર-૧૯ વર્લ્ડકપમાં ભારતને ચેમ્પિયન બનાવનાર કેપ્ટન ઉન્મુક્ત ચંદને જુનિયર ક્રિકેટર ઓફ ધ યર અને ૧૨ ટેસ્ટમાં ૧૧૪૫ રન બનાવવા બદલ રાહુલ દ્રવિડને ટેસ્ટ ક્રિકેટર ઓફ ધ યરનો એવોર્ડ એનાયત કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો. વન-ડે ક્રિકેટર ઓફ ધ યર સુરેશ રૈનાને અને બેટ્સમેન ઓફ ધ યર એવોર્ડ માટે સચિન તેંડુલકરને આપવામાં આવ્યો હતો. છેલ્લા ઘણા સમયથી બોલિંગમાં શાનદાર પ્રદર્શન કરી રહેલા આર.અશ્વિનને બોલર ઓફ ધ યરનો એવોર્ડ, જ્યારે ગૌતમ ગંભીર અને વિરાટ કોહલીને અંડર પ્રેશર એવોર્ડ એનાયત કરાયો હતો. આતંરરાષ્ટ્રીય ક્રિકેટમાં સો સદી બદલ સચિનને અને વન-ડેમાં બેવડી સદી ફટકારવા બદલ વિરેન્દ્ર સહેવાગને સ્પેશ્યલ એવોર્ડ એનાયત કર્યા હતો.

5 scientists receive PRL’s Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Awards

Five scientists from across the country working with different research institutions have bagged the Shri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Awards and PRL Award for 2011. The awards have been announced by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad.

These scientists have been chosen for their research work in the fields of Space Sciences, Space Applications, Electronics, Informatics, Telematics and Automation and Systems Analysis or Management, including non-linear, non-equilibrium systems in natural and social sciences and technology.

Prof Tarun Souradeep from Inter University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Pune and Dr Biswajit Paul from Raman Research Institute, Bangalore will be sharing the award in area of Space Science. Dr NR Patel from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun has been chosen for his work in Space Application.

Dr Ashwin Gumaste from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, is selected for his work in Electronics, Informatics, Telematics & Automation area. Dr Vineet K Gahalaut from National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad will also be feted with the PRL Award.

Prof Tarun Souradeep is working with Inter University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Pune. His work is related to the area of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy and polarization.

Dr Biswajit Paul is associated with Raman Research Institute, Bangalore and he is working on rotating neutron stars and black holes in our galaxy and its satellites, Paul’s favourite are the X-ray stars. He is also working as a co-editor of the COSPAR publication Advances in Space Research and Scientific Editor of the journal Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Dr NR Patel is working with Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun. He has been selected for the award in the Space Application area and usage of Remote Sensing for studying agro-meterology

Dr Vineet K Gahalaut who is associated with National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad will receive the award for his work in the field of Earth and Planetary Systems and his outstanding work using GPS system to understand the processes of crustal deformation and occurrence of earthquakes.

Dr Ashwin Gumaste is working with Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. He has been chosen for the award for the area of Electronics, Informatics, Telematics & Automation.

Pakistan's First Oscar

It's being called "Pakistan's Oscar," but 33-year-old filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be the one bringing the award home. The Karachi native's latest film, "Saving Face," which chronicles the lives of acid attacks victims in Pakistan and the doctor working  to help them, made history Sunday night at the 84th Academy Awards by winning Pakistan's first Oscar ever. The film was co-directed by American filmmaker Daniel Junge, and will air on HBO on March 8th.

Obaid-Chinoy accepted the award for Documentary Short Subject on stage and dedicated it to

 "all the women in Pakistan who are working for change – don't give up on your dreams."

CNR Rao to receive Firodia Lifetime Achievement Award

Professor CNR Rao, chairman of the scientific advisory council to the Prime Minister, will be awarded the lifetime achievement award instituted by the H K Firodia Foundation for 2011. He will be felicitated on November 17, 2011 for his contributions to physical sciences over the past five decades.

Besides, Roddam Narasimha, professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore, and Manindra Agarwal of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, will jointly receive the H K Firodia award.

The awards were announced by eminent scientist R A Mashelkar and Arun Firodia, chairman of the Kinetic Group, in Pune.

Mashelkar, who is a member of the awards selection committee, said, "Professor Rao is known as 'Mr Science of India'; he is one of the world's foremost solid, state and materials chemists, known for his numerous original discoveries. The foundation has instituted this special award to recognise world class contributions made by an Indian scientist who has devoted his lifetime to research in any branch of science."

This is the 16th year of the awards. Besides Mashelkar, other eminent scientists in the country, such as Anil Kakodkar, Govind Swarup and Vijay Bhatkar are part of the award selection committee.

Narsimha is one of the foremost aerospace scientists of India and a world renowned fluid dynamist. He has made path-breaking contributions to aerospace technology and atmospheric sciences. He will be awarded Rs 2 lakh.

Agarwal has carried out breakthrough research in encryption algorithms and developed two codes, namely 'Trinetra' and 'Indra'. These codes have been specially developed for the Indian Navy and Air Force to ensure security of inter-services communication. Agarwal will receive Rs 1 lakh.

The H K Firodia awards were instituted in 1996 in the memory of the late H K Firodia, a doyen of the automobile industry, to recognise excellence in science and technology.
